Iota Chapter History

In 1908, college men from the universities of Illinois and Ohio State joined to form a formal agricultural fraternity that came to be known as Alpha Gamma Rho. United by their common backgrounds and scholastic interests, these men created a National Fraternity that now extends from coast to coast. Now with over 70 chapters and nearly 60,000 members in the last 25 years, Alpha Gamma Rho is one of the premiere fraternities on college campuses nationwide.

-----------------

In 1915, Alpha Gamma Rho extended to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. With its large agricultural campus and being the heart of the "Dairy State," Madison was an obvious place for a chapter. George A. Chandler took the initial steps in founding the new chapter and worked to find a group of men fitting to make up the organization. The Iota Chapter, as it was named, has been an influential organization on the Greek campus and the university as a whole since then. Over 1,400 men have made the Iota Chapter both their college home and fraternity. Iota Chapter has had three different Fraternity houses over the years, but is currently located at 233 W. Lakelawn on the bank of Lake Mendota.

Alpha Gamma Rho offers membership in an organization that builds lifelong bonds of friendship and brotherhood. The men in this organization are not connected only through association, but by a deep understanding and friendship that only comes through membership in such a fraternity.

The Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity is in the business of "Making Better Men." It is the fraternity's policy that men who join will leave after their tenure better, better rounded men then when they arrived. This policy can be seen in the Purpose of Alpha Gamma Rho:

To make better men, and through them a broader and better agriculture by surrounding our members with influences tending to encourage individual endeavor, resourcefulness and aggressive effort along lines making for the development of better mental, social, moral and physical qualities; to promote a wider acquaintance and a broader outlook on the part of agricultural men through fellowship in a national organization that stands for the best social, mental and moral development.

With steadfast commitment and aggressive effort, the men of Alpha Gamma Rho are continually working to better themselves and set themselves apart as the premiere collegiate fraternity.
